Job Opportunity: Biological Transmission Electron Microscopy Research Scientist

Sandra Crameri has a position available working with infectious (particularly viral) diseases and requiring skills in conducting science using transmission electron microscopy. The position will be based in Geelong Vic., at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness CSIRO and will be of indefinite tenure. Post-Doctoral Research Fellow - UNSW

This is an opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Level A) to contribute towards the research efforts within the area of the gut microbiome’s role in health & disease.

A/Prof Nadeem Kaakoush has received an NHMRC Ideas grant (2022-2024) to conduct research on immunoglobulin degradation within the gut microbiome in the context of faecal microbiota transplantation. This work calls for the specialised skills of a post-doctoral fellow.

You will bring your expertise in molecular and cellular microbiology techniques as well as computational skills gained from your PhD. You would also be responsible for the co-supervision of PhD and undergraduate students working on the project, writing up the results and presenting them. As a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, you will carry out independent and team research within the field working closely and reporting to the Chief Investigator (Scientia Nadeem Kaakoush). The UTS Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (CPDRF) scheme is opening for applications from 26 April to 1 June 2022. The CPDRF scheme offers a four-year combination research and teaching appointment at Academic Salary Level B, Step 2 ($110,378 base salary as of 1 May 2022), plus 17 per cent employer-provided superannuation contribution; research project funding of up to A$50,000; access to the UTS International Research Development Scheme; Early Career Researcher development and support, and the option to complete a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching. The Australian Institute for Microbiology & Infection (AIMI, formerly the iThree Institute) is interested in supporting competitive applicants in any field of microbiology, infection, or disease relevant to the Institute. Postgraduate Research Scholarship - “Phage Therapy for Intracellular Pathogens”

Project synopsis: The treatment of intracellular infections due to pathogenic enterobacteria such as Shigella is complicated by complex lifestyles in the human host and by increasing antibiotic resistance globally. The aim of the project is to define phage-antibiotic activities against intracellular enteric pathogens. The successful candidate will gain skills in the development of phage cocktails, basic phage purification techniques, design of diagnostic tools, microscopy, bacterial mutagenesis, bacterial and phage genomics and epidemiology. Work will involve the use of appropriate cell, tissue and/or animal models.
